I just finished playing a game of BG that used only three
(3) stones.
I have never seen this before so it caught by surprise.
I took screen shots of the entire game.
Has anyone seen this anomaly before?

This a special game variant called "hypergammon".

You can select it in the game settings, or you can see if your opponent has this setting on, when the challenge is made:

The small icon with the three red dots indicate that the oncoming match will be a "hypergammon" variant. You have the option to decline or accept such challenges.
