I highly doubt that they are actually giving away free iPods.

Gratis (http://www.freepay.com) will give you free ipods at http://www.freeipods.com but their are conditions. You do have to sign up for one of their sponsors to recieve the ipod, AND so do five of your friends. Somewhere along the line this will cost you extra money, but if you actually want a product offered by one of their sponsors then you are on your way. The following news article linked through freepay seems insightful:

http://www.boston.com/business/personaltech/articles/2005/02/21 /that_free_ipod_wont_come_easy/

The site's full list of press articles can be found here:

http://info.freepay.com/pressroom.html

I don't know anyone who has tried this, but reading the press links it seems genuine. It's just a form of direct marketing.

Part of the problem with this scheme is that because you need 5 people to use an offer, they also need 5 people to use it to get their free Ipod. This means that the number of people who have used the service go up and makes it harder for you to get referrals. One way out of this I have seen is people simply paying their friends to do it, as it will still save you around 75% on the normal price.
